Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for sanctions against Russia’s nuclear industry and nuclear fuel after the bombing of a nuclear power plant in Ukraine.

“Russian nuclear terrorism demands a stronger response from the international community, [including] sanctions against the Russian nuclear industry and nuclear fuel,” he said. said on Twitter after speaking with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, to whom he “talked about the situation on the battlefield, in particular at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant”.

The European Union has already adopted several sets of sanctions aimed at cutting off financial support for Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, which also include oil and gas bans, but left nuclear energy off the list until ‘now.

Ukraine and Russia have blamed each other for Friday’s bombing in Zaporizhzhia, Europe’s largest nuclear facility, with both sides calling it an act of terror.

In light of the bombings, the head of the UN’s atomic agency, the IAEA, warned on Saturday of “the very real risk of a nuclear catastrophe which could threaten public health and the environment in Ukraine. and beyond”.
