Early Tuesday evening (June 14), the three-day IPL media rights auction, for the 2023-27 cycle, finally came to an end. In deals worth INR 48,390.52 crore, Disney-Star secured the TV rights for the Indian subcontinent (i.e. package A), for a whopping INR 23,575 crore (235.75 billion INR), while Viacom18 obtained the digital rights for the same region (Package A). B), for INR 20,500 crore (INR 205 billion).
Viacom18 also secured the rights to 18 exclusive IPL games, including the tournament opener, final and evening matches during the weekend, i.e. by purchasing the C package on sale to auction – for INR 3,273 crore (INR 32.73 billion). Finally, Package D was purchased by Viacom18 and Times Internet, which handles combined TV and digital rights for overseas markets. Of the other bidders, Zee Entertainment Enterprises was a strong contender for the D-package rights, but lost out to Viacom18 and Times Internet. In an exclusive interaction with PTI, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah – who was over the moon at the huge influx of money for the wealthiest cricket board after the end of the media rights auction – said spilled the wick on the women’s IPL and also made a huge claim about what the future of the men’s T20 premier league looks like.
“Let me inform you that from the next ICC FTP schedule, IPL will have an official window of two and a half months so that all the best international cricketers can participate. We have had discussions with various councils as well as with the ICC,” Shah pointed out.
Speaking at the long-awaited launch of the Women’s IPL, Shah said, “This is a project that is very close to my heart. We will start with five or six teams in the first edition. I am delighted with the kind of response that Several existing IPL teams have inquired and expressed serious interest in owning WIPL franchises.
Without forgetting the external interest. We are in discussions with other boards about the possible window when all the top cricketers will be available. I can promise the valuation of the league, franchises and media rights will stun everyone.”
