Wondering why the IIFA Awards carpet is green instead of red? This is how it all started

When you think of an award show or a big fashion event, you instantly visualize a red carpet saluting the stars. However, at the International Indian Film Academy Awards, things don’t happen the traditional way. Here, stars are greeted with a bright green carpet where they can flaunt their looks and pose for dads.

The change to the IIFAs took place 15 years ago. As part of their ‘Greening the IIFAs’ initiative, the traditional red carpet has been replaced with a green carpet to send an important message about climate change to the world.

In Sheffield, UK, in 2007, changing the color of the carpet made the Bollywood ceremony stand out from the rest. And until today, they have continued with the green carpet concept.

The IIFA organizer was quoted by The National News as saying: “IIFA has always helped create intelligent environmental messages that the stars and celebrities involved would convey to audiences and fans around the world. And today , with the power of celebrities, it worked.”
