Wisconsin: A shooter injures several people at a funeral

Incidents of gun violence in the United States show no signs of stopping. Just days after the tragic Texas school shooting and hours after shootings in New York and Oklahoma, Wisconsin police and local media say a shooter injured several people at a funeral.

“At 2:26 p.m. multiple shots were fired at Graceland Cemetery. There are casualties, but it is unclear at this time. The scene is still active and under investigation,” the Racine Police Department said on Twitter.

According to local media reports, five people gathered for the funeral were injured. The funeral was for Da’Shontay L. King Sr, a man who was killed by police in March.

Gun violence is endemic in the United States. Possession of firearms is something that enjoys constitutional protection. Opponents of free gun availability push for gun control, but gun rights supporters, primarily in the Republican Party, politically oppose such measures.

The debate takes on national significance whenever there is a mass shooting. But strong opinions are expressed on both sides almost every time.

The AFP news agency reported on Friday June 3 that a cross-party group of US senators was in talks on a narrow set of gun controls.

Nine senators gathered this week to discuss a response to the mass shootings that have appalled the nation, projecting optimism about the prospects for modest reforms.
