‘Wimbledon is not a tournament…’: Rafael Nadal on future after winning 14th French Open title

Rafael Nadal beat 23-year-old Casper Ruud in straight sets to claim the 2022 French Open title on Sunday (June 5). Throughout the just-concluded tournament in Paris, 36-year-old Nadal struggled with injury but still managed to beat world number one and defending champion Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals before extending his dominance at Roland Garros. with a sublime victory in the final.

Nadal beat Ruud 6-3, 6-3, 6-0 to win his 22nd Grand Slam title, most by any men’s singles and opened up about his future. Although much has been said and written about this year’s French Open being Nadal’s last, the veteran said he would “keep fighting” to continue and then spoke out on his participation in the next Wimbledon 2022.

Nadal spoke about his participation in Wimbledon and said after the final: “I will be at Wimbledon if my body is ready to be at Wimbledon. Wimbledon is not a tournament that I want to miss.”

“Wimbledon is a priority, always has been a priority. If I’m able to play with anti-inflammatories yes. To play with anesthetic injections I don’t want to put myself back in that position. Many big names have already pulled out of the upcoming Wimbledon in London. Although Nadal has not given a definite answer regarding his participation, many of his followers around the world are hoping that he will return to the court and win his 3rd Wimbledon title, after 12 years.
