We need €500m to save the club, claims FC Barcelona president as financial problems pile up

FC Barcelona is one of the most successful clubs in the history of football. The Spanish giants have not only been a force to be reckoned with in La Liga but have also dominated European football for decades. Some of the greatest footballers of all time have donned the Barcelona shirt and played for the Blaugrana. However, FC Barcelona is currently in a huge financial mess.

Barcelona are riddled with debt and facing one of their worst financial crises. The situation is dire and club vice-president Eduard Romeu has claimed he needs at least €500m to ‘save the club’ this year. Barcelona are seriously strapped for money and haven’t been able to fund any big signings.

One of the most valuable clubs in the world, Barcelona were once known as huge spenders in the transfer market. They signed among others Ousmane Dembele, Antoine Greizmann and Philippe Coutinho, who are among the most expensive footballers of all time. Barcelona also had Lionel Messi in their squad until 2021 and he was one of the highest paid footballers in the world at the time.

However, the club is no longer financially stable and had to let go of a number of superstars due to the crisis. Some of the star players like Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Gerard Pique also had to take pay cuts last season as Barcelona struggled to meet La Liga’s salary cap requirements. Now, club vice-president Romeu says Barcelona need €500m to save themselves.

“The number that does the most damage is the asset imbalance. The negative capital of €500m. You could add €150m to that in losses this season if we don’t do something. I already have it say, if someone wants to give me €500 million… That’s what we need to save Barca,” Romeu told Spanish outlet Sport in an interview.

Barcelona’s debt has reportedly reached a staggering figure of €1 billion. In October last year, it was reported that the club owed around €98m in fees to other clubs for player transfers. They are in dire straits and may need to sell other big names this season while not expecting too many big Camp Nou arrivals this summer.

Among the best players who can be sold this summer is Dutch midfielder Frenkie De Jong, who has been heavily linked with Manchester United and is set to be offloaded by the desperately-needed Spanish club soon. United are set to sign De Jong for around €70-80m, according to reports.
