Watch: During the inauguration, a new catwalk descends with several people in Mexico. I found why

In a shocking development, a newly constructed skywalk collapsed as it was inaugurated in the Mexican city of Cuernavaca on Tuesday. At the time of the incident, the mayor and several other people were present. The suspension bridge, which was erected over a picturesque stream, was made of wooden planks. The metal chains of the bridge have recently been remodeled. When it collapsed, the mayor and about two dozen other people fell about 3 meters (10 feet) into a ravine. In the creek bed were rocks and boulders. Among the injured were local officials such as city council members.

The incident was filmed. It appears that the collapse occurred after the planks separated from the chains supporting them. Mayor José Luis Urióstegui’s wife and reporters included the people, who fell after the bridge collapsed, Morelos Governor Cuauhtémoc Blanco said. Cuernavaca is located in the Morelos state of the country.

In a statement, the Cuernavaca city government said four city council members, two city officials and a local journalist were injured. They had to be extracted on stretchers and taken to local hospitals. Mayor José Luis Urióstegui was also sent to hospital. He had “minor injuries and is out of danger,” the city said.
