The United States said on Thursday (June 2) it would support a European resolution urging Iran to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the UN’s nuclear watchdog. The US stance came despite Iranian warnings that such a move would derail diplomacy. b
“We can confirm that we plan to join the UK, France and Germany in seeking a resolution focused on the need for Iran to cooperate fully with the IAEA,” the spokesperson said. of State Department Ned Price before a meeting next week.
“It is essential that Iran fully comply with its legally binding obligations ‘under the nuclear non-proliferation treaty,'” Price told reporters.
Talks to revive the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran have stalled. The deal, reached in 2015, limited Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. Former US President Donald Trump pulled the US out of the deal and reimposed crippling sanctions on the Islamic republic.
President Joe Biden backs a return to the deal and his administration has previously avoided condemning Iran at the IAEA, with the Europeans backing down as well.
But the US negotiator on Iran said the chances of a deal are dwindling despite more than a year of indirect talks.
The Biden administration has expressed a willingness to remove sweeping sanctions imposed by Trump in return for Iran returning to full compliance.
But Iran has also pushed for the removal of the clerical state’s elite Revolutionary Guards from a terrorism blacklist, a step Biden has rejected.
The latest IAEA report says Iran has failed to clarify questions regarding the presence of nuclear material found at three undeclared sites.
