The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has wreaked havoc around the world over the past two years. The deadly virus has killed millions and left millions in mourning. To counter the virus, Covid vaccines were developed in record time. However, the world has faced a huge challenge of distributing jabs fairly in different parts of the world. When high- and upper-middle-income countries administered the first and second doses of the vaccine, some countries were unable to meet this target – and most of these were in Africa.
The WHO once said that there are enough doses of vaccines in the world to reduce transmission and save many lives if they reach, in time, the people who need them most around the world.
A recent report also highlighted a similar case. While the vaccines could have been put to good use, they were wasted.
NBC News reported that more than 82 million doses of Covid vaccine were wasted in the United States from December 2020 to mid-May.
The US-based outlet reported citing Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data shared with it.
The number is basically an increase from the 65 million doses. It’s a tally CDC told the Associated Press news agency that was wasted in late February. According to the outlet, the majority of the doses released came from CVS and Walmart.
Earlier this year in February, the CDC explained that as demand for Covid vaccines declines, more vaccine will be wasted. The CDC states on its website: “As the rate of vaccine delivery slows, the likelihood of leaving unused doses in a vial may increase, even when providers continue to follow best practices for using all possible doses. .
According to the NBC News report, some of the wastage is due to doses reaching their expiration date before they can be given to patients.
Some doses were ruined due to power outages as the vials are supposed to be kept in freezers. The report also noted unused doses from open vials that needed to be discarded at the end of the day.
According to the CDC, more than 751 million doses of Covid vaccine in the United States are distributed and administered more than 589 million doses.
