US government orders seizure of plane belonging to Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich

Amid the crackdown on Russian oligarchs, the US government has ordered the seizure of two planes belonging to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich.

The US Department of Justice said the two planes – Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner and Gulfstream G650ER – violated US export controls.

However, reports claim the planes are beyond the reach of US law enforcement, even though “active steps” are being taken by authorities to track and seize them.

The US warrant said the Boeing and the Gulfstream were each transported from a foreign country to Russia.

“The Boeing was transported to Russia on March 4, 2022 without a BIS license and without license exceptions, and is now in the United Arab Emirates,” he said.

According to the filing, the Gulfstream was sent to Russia from March 12 to 15 and remains in the country.

The warrant of seizure further stated that Boeing and Gulfstream were owned by Roman Abramovich through a “series of shell companies in Cyprus, Jersey and the British Virgin Islands”.

The Boeing is believed to be worth around $350 million and the Gulfstream is worth around $60 million, US authorities have informed.
