US government analyzes deaths attributed to long Covid: report

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is sifting through death certificates across the country to analyze death cases that may be linked to long Covid. So far, it has detected more than 100 such cases, POLITICO reported citing officials familiar with the matter.

It remains to be determined whether those who died had prior health conditions, how long Covid was the cause of their death, or whether it was a contributing factor.

Long Covid is the term used to describe an array of symptoms that can last for months or longer after initial infection with the coronavirus.

Several post-Covid health issues have been detected in different organ systems, including the heart, lungs and kidneys. Other problems concerned the blood circulation, the musculoskeletal system and the endocrine system; gastrointestinal conditions, neurological issues and psychiatric symptoms were also identified in the study.

According to POLITICO, the National Center for Health Statistics, a division of the CDC, collected state death certificates between 2020 and 2021.

The CDC’s latest decision comes after they found in their study that one in five adult coronavirus survivors under the age of 65 in the United States experienced at least one health condition that could be attributed to long Covid.

The study found that Covid patients were twice as likely as uninfected people to develop respiratory symptoms and lung problems, including pulmonary embolism.

Post-Covid patients aged 65 and over were at higher risk than the younger group of developing kidney failure, neurological disorders and most mental health problems.

As of October 2021, after CDC approval, hospitals and medical facilities in the United States are tracking patients with long Covid symptoms with a specific identification known as the ICD-10 code.

This coding system, used for most notifiable diseases, helped researchers determine the group of people to study.
