Two Indians among 21 new cardinals appointed by Pope Francis

Two Indian clerics were among 21 people to be elevated by Pope Francis to the rank of cardinal at a ceremony at the Vatican in August, it was announced on Sunday.

The two Indian cardinals are Archbishop Filipe Neri Antonio Sebastiao di Rosario Ferrao – Archbishop of Goa and Damao (India) and Archbishop Anthony Poola – Archbishop of Hyderabad (India), the official Vatican News reported.

Following the Regina Coeli on Sunday, Pope Francis said that on August 27 he would hold a Consistory for the creation of new cardinals, according to the report.

He also indicated that he will meet from August 29 to 30 with all the cardinals to reflect on the new Apostolic Constitution Praedicate evangelium.

Eight of the newly appointed cardinals are from Europe, six from Asia, two from Africa, one from North America and four from Central and Latin America.

The College of Cardinals is currently composed of 208 cardinals, including 117 electors and 91 non-electors. From August 27, the number will increase to 229 cardinals, of whom 131 will be electors.

Father Ferrao was born in the village of Aldona near Panaji on January 20, 1953 and began his religious studies at Our Lady Seminary in Saligao and then proceeded to the Papal Seminary in Pune, Goa said on Sunday.

He has degrees in philosophy and theology and is fluent in Konkani, English, Portuguese, Italian, French and German, the official added.

Father Ferrao was ordained a priest on October 28, 1979 and on December 12, 2003 he was consecrated Archbishop of Goa and Daman by Pope John Paul II after the resignation of the then Archbishop, Father Raul Goncalves .

Bishop Anthony Poola, 60, was born on November 15, 1961 at Poluru in the Diocese of Kurnool. He was ordained a priest on February 20, 1992 and appointed Bishop of Kurnool on February 8, 2008. He was installed on April 19, 2008. He is chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Bishops’ Conference youth commission, the Union of Catholic News. .

On November 19, 2020, Reverend Anthony Poola was appointed Archbishop of Hyderabad.
