Two people have been found dead after a shooting at a supermarket north of Frankfurt, authorities said on Tuesday.
According to local police, gunshots were reported at the Schwalmstadt premises around 1 p.m. local time (1100 UTC).
“Based on consistent witness statements, a man first shot a woman in the grocery store and then apparently committed suicide,” a police statement said. “There are currently no indications of third party involvement.”

The motive for the murder was not immediately clear.
Apart from the two people who died – a 58-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman – no other people were reportedly injured and there was no danger to the public, the statement added.
“The crime scene has been cordoned off over a large area,” police said.
Authorities have opened a criminal investigation into the incident. The emergency services at the scene also set up a support center for witnesses and those affected.

The President of the Hesse Land Parliament, Astrid Wallmann, thanked the police for their work and offered her condolences to the relatives of the dead.
Schwalmstadt is a medium-sized rural town of just under 20,000 people located about a 90-minute drive north of Frankfurt.
