Two dead in supermarket shooting in German town of Schwalmstadt

Two people have been found dead after a shooting at a supermarket north of Frankfurt, authorities said on Tuesday.

According to local police, gunshots were reported at the Schwalmstadt premises around 1 p.m. local time (1100 UTC).

“Based on consistent witness statements, a man first shot a woman in the grocery store and then apparently committed suicide,” a police statement said. “There are currently no indications of third party involvement.”

“The crime scene has been cordoned off over a large area,” police said.

Authorities have opened a criminal investigation into the incident. The emergency services at the scene also set up a support center for witnesses and those affected.
