Two dead, 20 injured as two colliding cars ram into crowds in Nebraska

Two people have been killed and 20 others injured in an accident in Nebraska in the United States organized by the Midwest Association of Car Enthusiasts (MACE) which sent two cars rushing into a crowd of passers-by on a ‘cruise’ annual Memorial Day weekend night in Lincoln, Nebraska’s capital, Monday.

“We do not believe this was an intentional act and there is no evidence,” Lincoln police said in a statement.

According to reports, Lincoln Police Chief Teresa Ewins told a Monday afternoon news conference that none of the vehicles involved in the crash were participating in the “Americruise” event, which takes place been taking place in the city since the early 1990s. It was a collision that could have happened at any time, she said.

“At the time of the collision, there weren’t many people around,” Ewins said. “Cars were not driving down the street as usual during this event.”

Police say the crash happened when an 18-year-old Omaha man driving a black Ford Taurus traveling westbound on O Street hit a white Toyota Corolla that was ‘facing’ east . The women, both in Corolla, were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Taurus was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Two women, aged 20 and 22, were inside one of the cars and died in Sunday night’s crash on O Street in Lincoln. Among the injured bystanders, one person was listed in critical condition and the others were treated in hospitals for injuries not believed to be life-threatening, police said.
