Trump had mystery call with Putin days before 2020 election, filmmaker reveals Jan 6

Donald Trump had a mysterious phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin just nine days before the 2020 election, a documentary filmmaker with unprecedented access in the final months of the Trump administration has revealed.

While traveling on Air Force One on Sunday, October 25, 2020, filmmaker Alex Holder, a Jan. 6 committee witness, was told by Trump Chief of Staff Mark Meadows that a previously scheduled interview with the president at the time could not take place. .

“I remember the chief of staff came and said the interview couldn’t take place today because the president was on the phone. And I believe, if I remember correctly, he said that ‘he was on the phone with the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, that’s why the interview had to be postponed,’ Holder told Politico.

The British filmmaker began work on the film about Mr Trump in September of the same year. Through a connection to the President’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, Mr. Holder had access to Mr. Trump, then Vice President Mike Pence, some of Mr. Trump’s adult children – Ivanka Trump, Donald Trump Jr and Eric Trump – also. like other close associates of Mr. Trump.

Before the end of the Trump administration, Mr. Holder interviewed Mr. Trump and Mr. Pence at the White House and accompanied the president on trips on Air Force One. After Mr. Trump left office, he continued to speak to him at his golf clubs in Bedminster, New Jersey, and Mar-a-Lago in Florida.

Only a few of Mr. Trump’s close allies knew the documentary film project was underway.

Politico reported earlier in the week that Mr. Holder had been subpoenaed by the Jan. 6 committee. He handed over all of his footage and arrived in Washington, DC this week to appear before the panel for a closed-door deposition.

Politico reported Friday that Mr. Holder had private security with him when he showed up for an interview.

“Monday, I did not exist and I had 115 followers on Twitter. And today I think I have almost 20,000,” he said.

“I just received a text from [CNN host] Don Lemon,” he said in surprise during the interview.

He received a message from a friend in London saying “You got stung!” – he was photographed by paparazzi while at the Capitol.

When Mr. Holder traveled with Mr. Trump on Air Force One on Sunday, October 25, 2020 – three days after the second debate with then-candidate Joe Biden – Mr. Trump flew from Washington, D.C. to New Hampshire, then moved to Maine before returning to the nation’s capital.

Politico noted that the reason for Putin’s call that ended Mr. Holder’s interview that day could have been negotiations for an arms deal with the Russian president.

Axios reported on October 11, 2020 that Mr. Trump wants a nuclear deal with Mr. Putin before the election.

On October 26, the day after the reported phone call, the Russian government issued a statement on European security. But a Trump official who participated in those negotiations told Politico he could not recall a call between world leaders at that time.

But there was another story that broke on the 25th that could have triggered the call. During the debate with Mr. Biden in Nashville, Tennessee, a few days earlier, Mr. Trump had accused the former vice president of having received millions in a nefarious plot linked to Mr. Biden’s son, Hunter, and to its alleged business relations in Ukraine and Moscow.

On the Sunday the call allegedly took place, Mr Putin pushed back against that claim, saying Mr Trump’s claims were false.

Russian state-controlled media Sputnik tweeted the story at 8:40 a.m., with the story airing in US media later that afternoon. Reuters reported at 2:20 p.m. that “Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Sunday that he saw nothing criminal in Hunter Biden’s past business dealings with Ukraine or Russia, marking his disagreement with one of the lines of attack on Donald Trump during the US presidential election.

Mr Holder texted Politico regarding the timing of the call between Mr Trump and Mr Putin: “I *think* it was between NH and Maine”.

According to pool reports, Air Force One was scheduled to take off from New Hampshire at 2:32 p.m., land in Maine at 3:05 p.m. — the call may have taken place shortly after the story of Mr. Putin made the headlines.
