Top-ranked Swiatek leaves Berlin with shoulder problem

BERLIN (AP) — Top-ranked Iga Swiatek withdrew from next week’s grass-court tournament in Berlin with a shoulder problem, saying Friday she needed to rest before Wimbledon.

Swiatek is coming off her second French Open title after defeating American teenager Coco Gauff in the final at Roland Garros on Saturday. She was due to open her grass season in Berlin, but joined No. 2 Anett Kontaveit, No. 3 Paula Badosa and former No. 1 Naomi Osaka in withdrawing from the event.

Swiatek wrote on Twitter that she was stepping down due to “recurring discomfort I feel in my shoulder.”

She added that “I will focus on recovery and rest to be ready for Wimbledon”.

The 21-year-old Pole is on a 35-game winning streak and will seek her maiden Wimbledon title at the All England Club, where she has never made it past the fourth round.
