The Duffer Brothers Reveal ‘Stranger Things’ Final Season Will Be Shorter Except For The Finale

The Duffer Brothers explained why ‘Stranger Things’ season four episodes ran so long and revealed why they don’t expect season five to follow. According to The Hollywood Stories, during the latest “Happy Sad Confused” podcast episode hosted by Josh Horowitz, the creative minds of the Netflix hit opened up for a spoiler conversation about the second part of the show’s final season.

Some of the things they talked about were character deaths, an impromptu kiss between two of the show’s main characters, and what’s on the table for season five. This included what fans can expect from the episode lengths of the final season. Most of them lasted almost 80 minutes while the last three lasted no less than an hour and a half.

The duo say “we don’t expect” season five episodes to be this long, with the exception of the season five finale and the streaming series finale. Matt said, “We’re more likely to do what we did here, which is just have a two and a half hour episode.” He then went on to explain why season four episodes were ultimately so long.

“The only reason we don’t expect it to be that long is because usually – or this season if you watch it, it’s almost two hours before our kids really get sucked into some supernatural mystery. You get to know them, you can see them in their life, they have a hard time adjusting to high school and so on. Steve is trying to find a date, all that stuff,” Matt said.

He continued, “None of that is obviously going to happen in the first two episodes. For the first time ever, we’re not ending things at the end of four.” Regarding the pacing and starting point of the final season, Matt noted that “it’s going to go fast” although they’re not sure if it’s going to “go 100 miles an hour”.

Matt explained, “The characters are already going to be in action, they’re already going to have a focus and a practice, and I think that’s going to take at least a few hours and make this season really different.” “I’m sure the conclusion will be a lot longer,” Matt adds, before saying, with a laugh, “It’ll be The King Returns with, like, eight endings,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
