South Korea, US showcase airpower as US official visits Seoul

South Korea and the United States held a joint demonstration of air power on Tuesday during a visit by US Under Secretary of State Wendy Sherman.

The demonstration involved 20 combat aircraft, including F-35A stealth fighter jets.

North Korea fired eight short-range ballistic missiles on Sunday. The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said the launches were detected from 9:08 a.m. to 9:43 a.m. from the areas.

In response to North Korea’s missile fire, South Korea and the United States also fired eight surface-to-surface missiles off the east coast of South Korea.

United States Deputy Secretary of State Wendy R Sherman met with Cho Hyun-dong, South Korea’s First Deputy Foreign Minister in Seoul to discuss North Korea.

After the meeting, a press conference was held at which Sherman said: “Any nuclear test would be in complete violation of UN Security Council resolutions and there would be a swift and forceful response to any such test. “, she added: “I believe that not only the Republic of Korea, the United States and Japan, but the whole world will respond loudly and clearly.”

A statement from the South Korean military also came – “South Korea and the United States have demonstrated their strong ability and determination to strike quickly and accurately against any North Korean provocation,” they added, ” the allies are watching closely and preparing for any further provocation from the north.”

However, North Korean authorities and experts have long confirmed that there are signs of new construction at Punggye-ri, which is North Korea’s only known nuclear test site.

Even the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, said that “North Korean construction work to expand key facilities at its main nuclear facility in Yongbyon is progressing.”

North Korea has also suffered from its first-ever COVID-19 outbreak, reporting a total of 4,198,890 people with symptoms as of Monday.

But still, Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea refused any help offered by Washington and Seoul.
