Shreyas Iyer aims to overtake Rohit Sharma in elite roster as India prepare for T20I series in South Africa

India are preparing to face South Africa in a five-game T20I series at home starting Thursday, June 9. The first T20I of the series will be played at Arun Jaitely Stadium in New Delhi. The Indian players are back on national duty after the grueling Indian Premier League (IPL) season which ended on May 29 last month. The players hope to hit the ground running in Thursday’s opener.

In the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, KL Rahul will lead the team. While a number of youngsters have entered the team after an impressive IPL campaign, Hardik Pandya and Dinesh Karthik are also back.

Star hitter Suryakumar Yadav will also miss the series through injury and in his absence it will fall to Shreyas Iyer to play a key role for the Men in Blue in the top four. Iyer is likely to bat at number three and hopes to continue his fine form with the bat in the five-game T20I series.

Iyer will also be aiming to overtake Indian skipper Rohit in an elite hitting roster. Iyer is only 191 points away from finishing 1,000 points in T2OI for India and can become the 3rd fastest hitter to achieve the feat after Virat Kohli (29) and KL Rahul (32). Iyer currently has 809 carries in 36 T20Is at an average of 36.77 and a brilliant strike rate of over 140.

Iyer is coming off a decent season batting for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2022. Leading the team, Iyer scored 401 runs in 14 games averaging 30.85 and hitting more of 134 last season. While it was a decent campaign for him on a personal level, his team struggled and failed to qualify for the playoffs.
