SF Archbishop bans Nancy Pelosi from Holy Communion

The Catholic Archbishop of San Francisco is banning House Speaker Nancy Pelosi from receiving one of the holiest Christian rites in her hometown because of her support for abortion rights.

Salvatore Cordileone wrote in a public letter posted on Twitter that Pelosi should not accept Holy Communion at Mass and that priests will not offer it to her if she shows up.

Cordileone said “after many attempts to speak to her to help her understand the grave wrong she is doing,” she will be denied the rite “until she publicly repudiates her support for the ‘right’ to abortion and confess and receive absolution for his cooperation in this evil in the Sacrament of Penance.”

Pelosi is a member of the Archdiocese and a strong advocate for abortion rights, saying his position on abortion rights is in line with his Catholic beliefs. In September, she introduced a bill on the House floor to preserve access to abortion nationwide and counter Texas law that prohibits terminating a pregnancy after six weeks in the state. . The measure passed 219-210, almost entirely along party lines. Senate Republicans blocked passage of the Women’s Health Protection Act of 2021 in February.

Most recently, she called on the Democratic Party to fight for abortion rights after the U.S. Supreme Court’s draft opinion seeking to overturn Roe v. Wade.

“We need to activate our communities and make our voices heard,” Pelosi said recently. said in a video posted on social media. “People need to have their say on this family kitchen table issue.”

The US Supreme Court is expected to rule on the legality of abortion in the coming weeks.

Cordileone said Pelosi’s stance on abortion has become more extreme over the years and he condemned her for citing her Catholic faith to justify abortion as a woman’s choice. He pointed to a recent statement she made to the Seattle Times editorial board as an example of her putting herself in direct opposition to the church.

“The very idea that they would tell women their family size or timing or anything, the personal nature of that is so appalling, and I say that as a devout Catholic,” Pelosi told The Times. . “They tell me, ‘Nancy Pelosi thinks she knows more about having babies than the Pope.’ Yes. Are you stupid?”
