Russian-Ukrainian war: Kremlin hopes European leaders will discuss more than weapons when visiting Kyiv

In response to a crucial visit by European leaders to the war-damaged Ukrainian town of Irpin, the Kremlin said on Thursday (June 16) it hoped French, German and Italian leaders would discuss issues other than the supply of arms to Ukraine.

Speaking to reporters on a call, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Emmanuel Macron, Olaf Scholz and Mario Draghi should use their time with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to throw a ” realistic view of the situation.

The Kremlin has also warned against further Western arms deliveries to Ukraine. Peskov said such supplies would be “absolutely useless and cause further damage to the country.” Russia has repeatedly said that high-precision weapons supplied by NATO countries have aggravated the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.

Meanwhile, Zelensky greeted the leaders who arrived in Kyiv on a train to show their support for the war-torn nation. The German Chancellor said Zelensky will attend this month’s Group of Seven summit, which will be held June 26-28.

Speaking to reporters at Kyiv train station, Macron said he had a “message of European unity addressed to Ukrainian men and women”.

This particular visit plays a pivotal role at a time when several European countries are accused of failing to supply Ukraine with the scale of arms and weapons that Zelensky requested.

Italy will “rebuild everything”

Italy’s prime minister said he would ‘rebuild everything’ after leaders awoke to crumbling buildings in the Ukrainian town of Irpin.

“We will rebuild everything. They destroyed the kindergartens, they destroyed the kindergartens. Everything will be rebuilt. They have already started,” Draghi said.

“They know exactly where the sites that need to be rebuilt are. Each family has an app where they describe what happened, and they are already in a very advanced state,” he added.
