Russia walks out of Security Council meeting after EU blames Kremlin for looming food crisis

Russia’s UN Ambassador – Vassily Nebenzia – left a Security Council meeting after European Council President Charles Michel accused them of using the food as ‘a stealth missile against developing countries’ . The world is facing a severe food crisis and Michel blamed the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine for the situation. Ukraine is one of the main suppliers of food grains in the world, but the Russian army managed to block ships carrying food grains from Ukrainian cities, which caused a huge problem in the supply chain .

Michel spoke about his experience during his visit to Ukraine and said that he had seen a huge amount of grain and wheat being lost due to ships stuck in the Ukrainian port of Odessa for a very long time.

He also pointed out that the ongoing invasion has made it impossible for Ukraine to create other crops and existing grain is being destroyed due to the constant attack on storage facilities.

“It’s driving up food prices, pushing people into poverty and destabilizing entire regions,” Michel said according to The Guardian. “Russia is solely responsible for this impending food crisis. Russia alone.

This led Nebenzia to leave the meeting in protest. The ambassador told Reuters he might stay longer because of “the lies that Charles Michel came here to distribute”.

Russia’s deputy ambassador to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, also criticized Michel’s comments and told Russian channel Telegram they were untrue and “extremely rude”.

In his speech, Michel also claimed that the Russian military was stealing crops from different parts of Ukraine during the invasion and went on to call their actions “cowardly”.
