Russia ‘strategically lost’ the war in Ukraine, says UK Armed Forces chief

The head of the British armed forces says Russia has already “strategically lost” the war in Ukraine and is now a “more diminished power”.

Admiral Sir Tony Radakin said Vladimir Putin had lost 25% of Russia’s land power for only “tiny” gains.

While Russia could achieve “tactical successes” in the coming weeks, he said any notion that the war had been a success was “nonsense”.

Admiral Radakin, who is the UK’s chief of defense staff, said Russia lacked troops and advanced missiles and would never be able to take over all of Ukraine.

Admiral Radakin spoke to the PA news agency during his visit to Scotland on Wednesday, where he met soldiers at Edinburgh Castle.

He said: “This is a terrible mistake on Russia’s part. Russia will never take over Ukraine.

“Russia has already strategically lost. NATO is stronger, Finland and Sweden are trying to join.

He said Russia had been forced to back down from its goals of taking over most Ukrainian cities and was now engaged in a tactical battle where the fighting was “tough”.

Admiral Radakin said: “The Russian machine is moving away and it is gaining a few – two, three, five – kilometers every day.

“And it’s tough for Ukraine, but it’s going to be a long fight. And we support Ukraine, Ukraine has shown how brave it really is.

“And Russia has vulnerabilities because it lacks personnel, it lacks high-tech missiles.”

He continued: “President Putin used about 25% of the power of his army to win a tiny piece of territory and 50,000 people, dead or injured.

Russia is now a “more diminished power” diplomatically and economically than a few months ago, he said.

The Chief of the Defense Staff continued: “Any idea that this is a success for Russia is nonsense. Russia is failing.

“He could get some tactical success over the last few weeks. And these could continue for the next few weeks.

“But Russia loses strategically.”

Admiral Radakin said he was in touch with his Ukrainian counterpart, General Valerii Zaluzhnyi, who acknowledged they were in an “uphill battle” in the east.

Admiral Radakin said: “They are brave people.

“They are resourceful people in the way they fight the Russians.

“But they’re also honest people, actually saying they need help.”

He said the UK would continue its support for Ukraine and that “we are here for the long term”.

Earlier this week, Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak called on the West to help his country achieve “heavy weapons parity” with Russia in the war – calling for more heavy artillery, rocket systems and weapons. vehicles.

Admiral Radakin said he was “wary” of terms such as parity because no single capability would determine the outcome of the war.

The UK supplies MLRS rocket systems and has just delivered 120 armored fighting vehicles, he said.

He said: “We have provided anti-tank weapons, there are other items we are providing and that will continue.

“But it is the mass that is provided by the entire international community – and this adds to the courage and determination of the Ukrainian armed forces to fight for their territory.

“That’s where real parity lies, and where Ukraine’s real strength lies.”
