Russia says US ‘adds fuel to fire’; says further arms deliveries to Ukraine increase risk of confrontation

Russia has reacted to the planned delivery of new advanced missile systems and high-precision US weapons to Ukraine, as the Kremlin on Wednesday (June 1) accused Washington of “pouring oil on the fire”. Amid the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war, this is the 11th program of security assistance to Ukraine by the United States. Senior US administration officials have confirmed that US-made high-mobility artillery rocket systems, known as HIMARS, will be delivered to Ukraine.

In the aftermath, Russia issued a veiled warning on Wednesday saying that such arms shipments to Ukraine increased the risk of dragging the United States into direct conflict with Russia.

Sergei Ryabkov, who is Russia’s deputy foreign minister, told the RIA Novosti news agency that “any continued supply of weapons, which is increasing, increases the risks of such a development”.

Ryabkov was answering a question about the possibility of a direct confrontation between Moscow and Washington. He also said that the United States was determined to “wage war (with Moscow) on the last Ukrainian in order to inflict, as they say, a strategic defeat on Russia. This is unprecedented, it is dangerous”. .

Washington has said it will supply Ukraine with advanced missile systems, including the HIMARS multiple launch rocket system. It can launch multiple precision-guided missiles simultaneously. Officials said the HIMARS will be equipped with ammunition that will allow Ukraine to launch rockets about 80 kilometers away.

Besides Ryabkov, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also criticized the move, telling reporters, “We believe the United States is fueling the fire deliberately and on purpose.”

“Such supplies” do not encourage Kyiv to resume peace talks, Peskov said, adding that Washington wants to “fight Russia to the last Ukrainian”.
