Russia claimed on Tuesday that it had taken control of residential areas in Severodonetsk, a burning city in eastern Ukraine. The city is a key hub in the eastern Donbass region.
Russian and Ukrainian forces fought for the city for weeks, but the battle continues. The civilians fled and about 800 took refuge in a chemical plant.
“The residential areas of the city of Severodonetsk have been completely liberated,” Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said.
The Russian army is still seeking to take control of the “industrial zone and settlements closest” to the city, he added.
‘Heroic’ defense underway, says Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said a “heroic” was unfolding in the Donbass region.
“The situation on the front lines has not changed much in the past 24 hours. The absolutely heroic defense of Donbass continues, the trouble spots remain the same. First of all, Sievierodonetsk, Lysychansk and Popasna. We absolutely have the feeling that the occupiers did not believe that the resistance of our military would be so strong and now they are trying to bring new resources to Donbass. It’s the same in Kherson – they’re bringing in new units to stifle our actions,” he said. He was quoted by Reuters.
After failing to capture the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, Russia focused its firepower on the Donbass region. Separatist elements in the region have long enjoyed Russian support.
World Bank authorizes new funds for Ukraine
The World Bank’s board on Tuesday approved $1.49 billion in additional funds for Ukraine to help the country pay government and social worker salaries. These new funds have brought the total support pledged by the bank to more than $4 billion.
The World Bank said in a statement that the latest funding is backed by funding guarantees from Britain, the Netherlands, Lithuania and Latvia. The project is also supported by parallel funding from Italy and contributions from a new multi-donor trust fund.
