Rudy Giuliani faces ethics charges for Trump campaign role – WISH-TV | Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather forecast

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rudy Giuliani, one of Donald Trump’s top lawyers during the then-president’s failed efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, now faces professional ethics charges, the latest slap in the face. career after license suspensions in New York and the District of Columbia.

The Office of Disciplinary Counsel, the disciplinary arm of the Bar of the District of Columbia, has filed suit against the former federal prosecutor and mayor of New York, alleging he promoted unsubstantiated allegations of voter fraud in Pennsylvania. The suit was filed June 6 and became public on Friday.

At issue are Giuliani’s claims to support a Trump campaign lawsuit to overturn the Pennsylvania election results. The lawsuit, which sought to invalidate up to 1.5 million mail-in ballots, was dismissed by the courts.

The attorney’s office said Giuliani’s conduct violated Pennsylvania ethics rules “in that he filed a lawsuit and asserted non-frivolous baseless issues in law and made to do so” and “that he had engaged in conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice.”

The attorney requested that the DC Court of Appeals Commission on Professional Liability hear the case. Giuliani has 20 days to respond, according to the filing. An attempt on Saturday to reach a lawyer for Giuliani failed.

This step is the latest against Giuliani for his role in Trump’s debunked claims that the 2020 presidential election was fraudulent.

Last June, an appeals court suspended him from practicing law in New York because he made false statements while trying to get the courts to overturn Trump’s loss. A lawyers’ disciplinary committee had asked the court to suspend his license on the grounds that he breached rules of professional conduct by promoting theories that the election had been stolen by fraud.

The DC Bar temporarily suspended him last July, though the practical implication of that action is debatable, given that Giuliani’s law license in Washington has been inactive since 2002.

News of the attorney’s action follows the first public hearing of the House committee investigating the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021. Giuliani met with the committee for hours last month.
