Rishabh Pant to lead India in T20I series against SA after KL Rahul, Kuldeep Yadav ruled out with injury

India have been dealt a major blow ahead of the start of the T20I series against South Africa as captain KL Rahul was ruled out with injury. Along with Rahul, spinner Kuldeep Yadav was also ruled out of the five-game series due to injury. Rahul was supposed to lead the team in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma, who rested for the series.

However, with injury ruling him out, Rishabh Pant will now replace him as captain of the five T20Is. This will be Pant’s first time captaining the Indian team after leading Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the past two seasons. Pant and Rahul are still part of India’s management group under regular captain Rohit.

BCCI confirmed the development on Wednesday and said all-round star Hardik Pandya would be the vice-captain for the T20I series against South Africa. Hardik had a phenomenal campaign for Gujarat Titans (GT) in the recently concluded IPL 2022 leading them to their first title in their debut season.

BCCI have confirmed that Rahul suffered a right groin injury while Kuldeep will miss after being hit in the right hand as he kicked in the net on Tuesday (June 7). No replacement has yet been named for the duo.
