Rep. Jamie Raskin: ‘Reasonable’ people understand Trump deliberately propagated the election lie

Rep. Jamie Raskin said Sunday that “any reasonable person” listening to the House Select Committee hearings on Jan. 6 will understand that former President Trump knew he was spreading a lie about the 2020 election.

The committee member, Maryland Democrat, also said “in due course” that the committee’s investigation will provide additional details about members of Congress who have sought presidential clemency.

“Any reasonable person in America would say [former President Trump] must have known he was spreading the big lie,” he said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Mr. Raskin said the committee would continue this week to flesh out the details of the attack on the Capitol and the role Mr. Trump played in instigating it.

“I think it continues to be an absolutely shocking event in American history that there was an attempted political coup organized by the President of the United States to overturn an election to stay in power,” Mr. Raskin said.

The Montgomery County Democrat urged voters to stay focused on the hearings “because the danger is still there.”

Democrats touted ratings from Thursday night’s opening hearing, which aired live on multiple cable and broadcast channels and drew a collective audience of more than 20 million viewers — though at least one analysis of the numbers suggests that the ratings were disappointing.

Mr. Raskin avoided questions about whether the committee should criminally refer Mr. Trump to Attorney General Merrick B. Garland and the Justice Department.

“I think he knows, his staff knows, American lawyers know what’s at stake here,” he said. “I think they are rightly paying attention to precedent and history and the facts of this case,” he said.

Asked which lawmakers have sought clemency, Raskin said the committee would shed more light on the issue.

“Asking for forgiveness is a powerful demonstration of awareness of guilt or at least awareness that you might be in trouble,” he said.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said every member of Congress should be able to say whether or not they’ve asked for a presidential pardon.

“I’m happy to answer that question,” she said.
