Poll: Harriet Hageman leads Liz Cheney by 22 points in Wyoming primary

Trump-endorsed congressional candidate Harriet Hageman leads Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) by 22 points ahead of the Aug. 16 primary, according to a Friday Casper Star-Tribune/Mason-Dixon Poll.

The poll found Hageman leading Cheney 52% to 30%. Eleven percent are undecided.

Sixty-six percent also disapprove of Cheney’s overall performance in Congress, which is driven by his participation in Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) Jan. 6 partisan committee:

Of those polled, only 27% approved of Cheney’s professional performance. Two-thirds disapproved, with 7% saying they weren’t sure. Men were particularly critical of Cheney’s performance: only one in five approved of the work she does.

These results follow interviews conducted by the Star-Tribune this summer. Critics of the congresswoman say she is too distracted by her service on the House committee on Jan. 6 and her battles with Trump to serve the state well, and the poll found 54% of voters were less likely to support her because she is part of the panel investigating the Attack on the Capitol.

Throughout the campaign, Cheney solicited votes from Democrats and raised funds from donors to Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

It seems that Cheney is more popular with Democrats than Republicans. The poll showed Cheney’s approval rating among Wyoming Democrats is over 50%, although there aren’t enough Democratic voters willing to help Cheney in the Republican primary.

“Cheney has a 53% jobs approval rating with Democrats planning to vote in the Republican primary,” the poll said. “But due to the relatively small number of Democrats in Wyoming, cross-voting is unlikely to make a difference.”

“While 69% of registered Democrats who plan to run in the GOP primary support Cheney, that level of support still leaves her behind Hageman by a wide margin,” the poll finds.

According to a previous poll, Hageman leads in the polls by 28 and 30 points. PredictIt’s betting odds on Friday show Hageman favored to easily beat Cheney by 93 cents on the dollar. Cheney’s odds of winning the contest are pegged at 6 cents on the dollar.

The Mason-Dixon poll sampled 1,100 Wyoming voters from July 7-11 with a 3-point margin of error.
