The IRIS-T air defense system will be supplied to Ukraine by Germany, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said. This decision was taken after Kyiv and German opposition parties demanded to increase deliveries of heavy weapons. Germany had “delivered continuously since the beginning of the war”, Scholz added. Since the beginning of the invasion, Germany has already sent more than 15 million cartridges, 100,000 grenades and more than 5,000 anti-tank mines to Ukraine. In the Bundestag, Scholz told lawmakers: “More recently the government decided that we would provide the most modern air defense system Germany has in the form of the IRIS-T.
IRIS-T SLM is a medium-range surface-to-air defense system. Scholz, while responding to criticism in his speech to parliament, said his government responded to the Russian invasion with a “massive change of policy in Germany” by sending heavy weapons into a war zone.
