Need for a wicket-keeper who will play Dhoni’s role: Shastri explains how Karthik can cement his place in the Indian squad

Dinesh Karthik was phenomenal as a finisher for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. the willow and defended his team to bail them out under pressure while battling in the lower middle order. Karthik also managed to earn a call up to the Indian squad with his sensational performances for RCB.

The 36-year-old wicketkeeper has had a stellar season for the RCB, amassing 330 runs in 16 games with an average of 55 and a blistering 183.33 strike rate. Karthik will return to the Indian squad after a three-year hiatus when he last played for the Men in Blue at the 2019 ODI World Cup in England.

He was sent off after the end of the World Cup and couldn’t make his return to the national team. However, his splendid touch in IPL 2022 forced the coaches to recall him to India’s squad for the upcoming T20I series against South Africa at home.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri recently spoke about Karthik’s return to the Indian team and how the veteran wicket-striker can cement his place in the team. Shastri thinks India needs someone like MS Dhoni who can finish the team’s games in the lower middle order.

“This is his chance. If and when he gets an opportunity in these games, he has to do it in India colors. We know he has the experience so it becomes extremely vital,” Shastri said. on Star Sports.

“You have to see from the team’s point of view, what are they looking for? Do they want a keeper who will beat at the top of the order or do they want a keeper who will finish? I’ll go for the latter. You need a guardian who will play the role of MS Dhoni, let’s put it that way.

“There is already Rishabh Pant who can hit in the top four or five in T20 cricket but you want someone who can keep and finish a game as there are not too many finishers now with MS (Dhoni) having abandoned. So I think that’s where his chances are very good,” added the former India head coach.
