My wife and kids helped me stand: R Ashwin recalls India’s miraculous escape from SCG test

India and Australia have engaged in a grueling four-game Test series in 2020/21 Down Under. At the last edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, India had their backs against the wall most of the time, but found a way to organize a comeback at any time to finally beat Australia then led by Tim Paine 2-1 in their own backyard and retain the BG trophy.

After trailing 1-0 after the series opener defeat, India were then without regular captain Virat Kohli – who was on maternity leave – but defied all odds to eventually emerge on top. Under Ajinkya Rahane, India leveled the series in the second Test, at the MCG, then pulled off a heist to save the third and penultimate encounter before winning the series final by three wickets.

Recently, R Ashwin recalled the miraculous escape from the SCG Test in India, where his unbeaten sixth wicket and that of Hanuma Vihari saved the visitors from the jaws of defeats. “It surprised me that I went bowling after the injury with painkillers. And I played 13 or 14 at the trot. It was so bad that I was rolling on the floor from the pain. My wife and my kids helped me up and then the physio came to check me. I went to the game crawling but I tried my best,” Ashwin told ANI.

The 62-point stand between Ashwin and Vihari helped India save the Test match when asked to chase 407. At one point India were 250-3 and on offense with the kind authorization of the 97 of Rishabh Pant and the gravelly 77 of Cheteshwar Pujara. However, their dismissals revealed India’s lower order, filled with injured players such as Ravindra Jadeja, Vihari and Ashwin.

Recalling how he and Vihari found a strategy not to let Australia break their position, Ashwin added: “We both felt comfortable from the moment we walked in. We realized what a problem we had, he couldn’t step forward and go on the back foot. He had a hamstring injury. When I went into the crease, I couldn’t go forward against the fast bowlers. So in this situation, I said let’s do a rotation and see how it works.

Young talents such as Shubman Gill, Washington Sundar, T Natarajan, Md Siraj, Shardul Thakur, Pant etc. prevailed in India’s memorable 2-1 win over Australia.
