Mithali Raj’s career in numbers – An undisputed legend in Indian cricket

Veteran Indian batsman Mithali Raj announced his retirement from international cricket on Wednesday June 8, ending his illustrious career. One of the greatest female cricketers of all time and a legend of the sport, Mithali has been a torchbearer for women’s cricket in India over the years. India’s ODI captain has taken to social media to confirm her decision to end her career filled with ups and downs.

“As a little girl, I embarked on the journey to carry the Indian blues as the representative of your country’s highest honour. The journey has been full of ups and downs. Each event has taught me something unique and the past 23 years have been the most fulfilling, challenging and enjoyable years of my life,” Mithali said in her announcement.

“Like all journeys, this too must come to an end. Today is the day I retire from all forms of international cricket,” added the skipper of India’s women’s team ODI.

One of the most decorated Indian cricketers of all time, Mithali is the leading run-getter for women’s ODIs and also holds the record for most ODI centuries for India. She was one of the longest servants of the Indian women’s team and took the party to greater heights under her leadership.

She made her debut for India’s women’s team in an ODI against Irish women in June 1999 and there was no looking back as the elegant right-winger established her credentials as one of the best in the world. She has had one of the longest international careers in women’s football and has come through several milestones.

An undisputed legend of Indian cricket, there are a few who have had the kind of impact that Mithali has had when it comes to women’s cricket in the country. She scored the most runs in women’s ODI history and also captained most matches in the fifty-plus format in women’s cricket.

Mithali has played 12 Tests, 232 ODIs and 89 T20Is during her storied career, amassing 699, 7805 and 2364 runs respectively in the three women’s cricket formats. Besides being the leading run-getter in the ODIs and Women’s T20Is, she also holds several other in-game records.
