A US Senate candidate from Pennsylvania’s effort to celebrate Juneteenth on Donald Trump’s Truth Social platform ended in a hiccup when commenters noticed a key word was omitted from the final draft .
In a “truth” posted by Mehmet Oz, better known as TV’s Dr. Oz, the Republican candidate proclaimed on Sunday that “[o]Our country is better thanks to our freedoms and our unity”.
But Twitter and Truth Social users, including left-wing activist Ron Filipkowski, noted that an original draft of the post, which was “truthfully” later deleted, also listed another virtue to be celebrated on June 19: legality.
“Our country is better because of our freedoms, unity and equality,” the message originally read.
The Independent contacted the Dr. Oz campaign for comment on the reported wording change.
Juneteenth is a federal holiday commemorating the date enslaved American blacks in Texas were proclaimed free by general order of a Union Army commander. The date was formalized in a bill signed by Joe Biden in June last year.
The holiday itself, which is also sometimes called Emancipation Day or Black Independence Day, is controversial within the American right. More than a dozen far-right members of the U.S. House of Representatives voted against establishing the date as a holiday last year, including key allies of former President Donald Trump. The Senate, meanwhile, passed the bill unanimously.
After winning Donald Trump’s endorsement, Dr. Oz won the Pennsylvania GOP primary last month by a narrow margin that drove the race to a recount. He now trails Democratic rival John Fetterman, the state’s lieutenant governor, by double digits according to the race’s latest poll. The famous doctor has come under heavy criticism from Mr Fetterman, an avowed Yinzer, after it was reported that he remains registered to vote in New Jersey and had voted there as recently than in 2020.
The Lieutenant Governor posted his own Juneteenth message on Twitter on Sunday morning, saying, “#Juneteenth should have been a federal holiday a long time ago. Today we celebrate emancipation + reflect on the long shadow of systemic racism in America. PA always stands by the unwavering truth that Black Families Matter + Black Lives Matter.
