A new poll shows a majority of Americans believe former President Donald Trump bears a large responsibility for the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol and should be charged with a crime.
ABC News/Ipsos found that 60% of Americans believe the select committee investigating the riot is conducting a fair and impartial investigation. Similarly, 58% of Americans think that Mr. Trump bears a good or great deal of responsibility for the events of January 6 and should be charged with a crime.
The poll was conducted between June 17 and June 18 and involved a sample of 545 adults aged 18 or older.
About a third of voters said they watched hearings closely, with 9% saying they watched them very closely and 24% said they watched them quite closely. By comparison, 30% say they don’t watch hearings that closely and 36% say they don’t watch them closely at all. Only one percent say they skipped it.
The poll comes as the select committee enters its third week of hearings. Nearly 20 million people tuned in to the first primetime hearing of the select committee — which includes seven Democrats and two Republicans — despite heavy criticism from the former president and Fox News choosing not to broadcast the event on its flagship network.
Last week’s hearing featured testimony about how Mr Trump’s advisers repeatedly told him not to declare victory on election night, which he ignored on the advice of a allegedly drunk Rudy Giuliani, his lawyer and former mayor of New York. Similarly, former advisers to former Vice President Mike Pence have detailed the pressure campaign that Mr. Trump and his attorney John Eastman mounted to convince Mr. Pence to overturn the election results.
On Tuesday, Georgian Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and his chief executive Gabriel Sterling are both due to testify this week.
