Liverpool agree deal to sign Benfica striker Darwin Nunez as Sadio Mane looks set to leave the club

Liverpool are reportedly close to agreeing a deal to sign Benfica striker Darwin Nunez. The Uruguay striker is currently one of the highest-rated young talents in the world and will significantly strengthen Liverpool’s attack as the Reds prepare for the departure of star striker Sadio Mane this summer. Liverpool have already agreed a fee with Benfica for the prolific striker.

According to a report by sky sports, Liverpool will have to pay a sum of around 100 million euros in total, including supplements to land Nunez from the Portuguese side. The Premier League giants will pay a fee of around €75m to Benfic with the remaining €25m in add-ons.

Nunez was one of the best players in Portugal’s Primeira Liga last season. He scored 34 goals for the club across competitions to catch the eye of some of Europe’s top clubs. Manchester United were also keen to secure the forward’s services and were in talks with his agent.

However, Manchester United did not want to be embroiled in a bidding war with Liverpool for the Benfica star and decided to drop out of the transfer race. Liverpool are reportedly set to offer Nunez a five-year deal at Anfield and the Uruguay international will undergo his medicals next week.

Nunez, 22, will be the ideal replacement for Senegal striker Mane, who is expected to leave Liverpool this summer. Mane has been instrumental in Liverpool’s success under current manager Jurgen Klopp and has always been among the club’s targets after forming a famous trio alongside Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.

However, he is now keen to walk away from the club with favorites Bayern Munich to sign him this summer. The 30-year-old has just one year left on his contract with Liverpool and has rejected Liverpool’s new deal. Apart from Mane, Salah has just one year left on his contract at Liverpool but is unlikely to move this summer.
