Earth is called a blue planet for a reason. Most of its surface is covered by oceans and what remains is used by us to live and survive. The oceans and ocean currents play a major role in regulating the global climate. They keep our planet cool AND warm. The oceans are rich in life as they are in minerals and oil. This makes them extremely important to the modern global economy. Despite all the advancements we have made in transportation solutions, the sea lanes still see the traffic of vessels carrying out most of the world’s trade.
The celebration of World Oceans Day is therefore an apt ode to a living, breathing body without which humans would not survive.
The United Nations has a high priority for World Oceans Day, as 90% of the large fish population and 50% of coral reefs are gone. This does not bode well for our planet.
“World Oceans Day reminds everyone of the major role the oceans play in daily life. They are the lungs of our planet and a major source of food and medicine and an essential part of the biosphere. The purpose of the Day is to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean, to develop a global movement of citizens for the ocean, and to mobilize and unite the world’s population around a project for the sustainable management of the world’s oceans”, says the UN.
For World Oceans Day 2022, the UN is organizing the first hybrid celebration of the annual event. The celebration will take place at the United Nations headquarters in New York. It will also be broadcast live.
The theme for World Oceans Day 2022 is “Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean”.
