Joe Root left three other Fab Four hitters far behind, reckons India’s former Stumper

England and New Zealand were embroiled in a clash when the two sides met in the opening three-game Test series at Lord’s last week. In a thrilling clash, Kane Williamson-led New Zealand set a tough target of 277 points for the hosts led by Ben Stokes, after being dismissed for 132 on the first try, and had the home side down to 69/ 4 before the former skipper. Joe Root’s sublime 115 saved England and took them to a memorable five-wicket win over the Kiwis.

Despite dropping the captaincy in the format, Root continued to lead the charge with the bat and his 26th Test ton also helped him reach the 10,000-run mark in the Tests. He became the second Englishman, after Sir Alastair Cook, and the 14th batsman overall to achieve the illustrious feat. Root’s form has been such that he has amassed 2,192 runs including 9 centuries in the past 18 months, while rivals such as Virat Kohli, Williamson and Steve Smith haven’t touched a single tonne since early January 2021.

So former Indian stumper Saba Karim lavished huge praise on Root. In a discussion on India ahead, Karim said Root’s consistency has put him well ahead of the other three Fab Four hitters. “He’s gone way ahead. Joe Root has left the other three hitters way behind for the past two years. Whether it’s consistency, technique or temperament, in all of those aspects, Joe Root is above and beyond. everyone right now.”

“And we’re not discussing one more thing, that if we see the England batter, other than Root, we don’t see any other name come to the fore. That means Joe Root single-handedly scored runs and hit centuries, he has not received any support from the other side,” added Karim.

Root will be eager to continue in a similar position and guide England to an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-game series when the second and penultimate Test begins on June 10 at Trent Bridge, Nottingham.
