Joe Biden to visit Saudi Arabia in July, plans to meet with Mohammed bin Salman

US President Joe Biden will visit the Middle East to reinvigorate their relations with key partners in the region and he will meet with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. According to the Wall Street Journal, Biden will also visit Israel for the first time since taking office. One of the main talking points will be the current crisis surrounding the Iran nuclear deal. However, the report claims that a number of people from the Democratic Party spoke out against the proposed visit due to the history of human rights abuses against Saudi Arabia. However, according to the travel plan, Biden will meet with Saudi leaders in Riyadh.

According to US officials, Biden is seeking to work with Saudi Arabia on a number of issues ranging from rising fuel prices to security issues in the region. Saudi Arabia signed a truce with Iran-backed forces in Yemen earlier in the year and that played a significant role in making Biden’s visit possible.

Besides Saudi Arabia, Biden will meet members of the Gulf Cooperation Council – Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates – as well as Jordan, Iraq and Egypt.

“The president appreciates King Salman’s leadership and his invitation,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement. “He looks forward to this important visit to Saudi Arabia, which has been a strategic partner of the United States for nearly eight decades.”

The other important part of Biden’s visit to the region will be his meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas. According to senior white officials, the meetings will aim to “reaffirm his lifelong commitment to a two-state solution.”
