The Jan. 6 committee linked former President Donald Trump’s personal attorney, Rudolph W. Giuliani, to false allegations that the 2020 election was stolen, including testimony that Mr. Giuliani was “in drunk” on election night.
Representative Liz Cheney, vice chair of the committee, introduced the allegations by outlining testimony that Mr. Trump sought advice from Mr. Giuliani, who was allegedly intoxicated.
“You will also hear testimony that President Trump rejected the advice of his campaign experts on election night and instead took the course recommended by an apparently inebriated Rudy Giuliani. [to] pretend he won,” Ms Cheney said.
In a video deposition, former Trump campaign spokesman Jason Miller confirmed he believed Mr Giuliani was intoxicated in the White House, but he did not know the extent of it. he was saying to Mr. Trump while he was in this state.
“The mayor was definitely drunk, but I didn’t know his level of drunkenness when he spoke with President Trump,” Miller said.
Ms Cheney blamed Mr Trump’s airing of his stolen election claims for leading millions of Americans to believe a lie and sending hundreds of his supporters to jail on charges stemming from the January 6, 2021 riot .
Monday’s high-profile hearing focuses on Mr Trump’s claims that the election was stolen.
Former Fox News editor Chris Stirewalt has testified about his decision to call Arizona for President Biden – a move that touched a nerve for the former president and his team.
Former Trump campaign manager William Stepien was scheduled to appear in person, but was absent due to his wife giving birth Monday morning.
Video clips of Mr. Stepien were shown instead of having him appear. He said he urged Mr. Trump on election night not to declare victory, but Mr. Trump rejected his advice.
The committee hearing is the first of several this week and next week, as the Democratic-led panel releases its findings in its investigation into the 2021 Capitol riot.
