January 6 committee ‘advocates’ DOJ of Trump-led ‘seditious conspiracy’

Former Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson told “MSNBC Reports” on Friday that the House Select Committee investigating Jan. 6 was arguing with the Justice Department that former President Donald Trump had carried out a “seditious conspiracy “.

Johnson said, “What I heard last night at this hearing, and here I am in my role as a former federal prosecutor, which I was over 30 years ago, the committee makes a very clear case for the Department of Justice of a criminal act by none other than Donald Trump. The chairman of the committee now uses the words coup attempt, attempts to overthrow the government in connection with Donald Trump.

He added: “It is also noteworthy that the Proud Boys have been charged in connection with a seditious conspiracy. It appears the committee is arguing that Donald Trump joined in this seditious plot. There is also the accusation of insurrection, of acts of violence against the American government, as well as those who bring aid and comfort to it. In my opinion, that was the very definition of an insurrection. And then finally, what I found remarkable was the use of the word fraud last night. Wire fraud, brought by wired broadcasting, the very conventional tool of federal prosecutors for prosecution. It appears the committee is now also trying to argue that Trump and the people around him were engaging in a form of fraud by inciting people to commit these acts of violence based on something they knew to be a lie.

Anchor Katy Tur asked: “Is it difficult for an attorney general to potentially indict a former president of another party?”

Johnson said: “Well, it’s unprecedented, unprecedented. But from all I know, from what I’ve seen from public sources and from last night, I think we’re in the realm of what an aggressive prosecutor would assume. I think there’s going to be a lot more evidence coming out of these committee hearings, and the Department of Justice at that point will have to make some really tough decisions.
