IPL media rights auction: everything you need to know about date, time, bidders, base price

IPL 2022 was a huge success all over the world. It has seen the tournament grow further with the addition of two new teams, namely eventual winners Gujarat Titans (GT) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), and now the focus is on the media rights auction. IPL, as some of the country’s biggest media houses are locking horns in an electronic auction to win the rights to broadcast the world’s richest cricket league on their platform.

For the uninitiated, the eventual winners of the tender will win the broadcast rights to the league for a five-year cycle, starting next year’s IPL in 2023 through 2027.

When will the electronic auction take place?

The electronic auction for IPL media rights is set to begin on Sunday, June 12 at 11:00 AM IST, according to various reports. There is no scheduled end time or date, therefore, there is a good chance that the auction will continue for more than one day.

What is there to gain?

The whole procedure was divided into a total of four packages (A, B, C and D). While Package A will include TV rights for the Indian subcontinent only, Package B will have digital rights for the same region. Speaking of Package C, it will have the digital rights for a special series of matches for the Indian subcontinent (like the final, playoff matches, tournament opener, and some weekend matches held in the evenings). Finally, the D package will have TV and digital rights for the rest of the world.

What is the base price and how will the process work?

All packages have a separate base price. Here is what is the base price for all four packages for the current auction –

Package A – INR 490 million per game

Package B – INR 330 million per game

Package C – INR 110 million per game

Package D – INR 30 million per game

Bids for lots A and B will be placed simultaneously. Later, the tenders for lots C and D will be made together.

The bidders

While Amazon recently retired its name, some of the biggest media houses are still in the running and are all set to be involved in an intense auction. Reliance-owned Viacom TV 18 Group, Disney-owned Star Group and Sony-Zee are big names in the bidding process.
