IPL Final 2022: Virender Sehwag questions R Ashwin for not standing still in GT vs RR clash

Gujarat Titans (GT) locked horns with former winners Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the IPL 2022 final showdown on Sunday night (May 29) at the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad. Despite winning the coin toss in the crucial encounter, the Sanju Samson-led RR franchise fell flat against the Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat franchise as they claimed the elusive title in their debut season. IPL.

Flying first, Samson & Co. struggled as the big guns – Jos Buttler, Samson, Shimron Hetmyer, etc. – couldn’t do much and the RR franchise was just 130-9 (courtesy of Hardik’s 3/17 and Sai Kishore’s twin scalps). In response, RR had limited GT to 23-2, however, Hardik (34), Shubman Gill’s 45* and an unbeaten 32 from 19 from David Miller brought GT home. After the clash, former India fly-half Virender Sehwag slammed R Ashwin for not using his off-spin and throwing the carrom ball in the apex clash.

Sehwag questioned Ashwin’s approach to bowling, saying he should have stuck with conventional off-spin on the surface. “Ashwin should have stuck with his out-of-rotation deliveries because it bothered the hitters. Instead, he threw his carrom balls,” Sehwag told Cricbuzz.

“There was even a bad pass formed at the end, which could have troubled Gill. He could have tried to send Pandya away like that too. But, his mindset is different, try wickets with his variations,” the iconic player asserted.

Sehwag also felt that RR should have stuck to the chase, which they did brilliantly in Qualifier 2 against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), and should also place an additional point guard on a surface similar to the fast bowlers from Ahmedabad. “RR knew how difficult it was to play pacers on this surface, but they still went with their two spinners instead of a fourth fast bowling option. They will also wonder if they should have struck first after winning the toss after chasing so well in Qualification 2,” he added.
