IPL 2022: GT mentor Gary Kirsten praises Hardik Pandya and reveals his uniqueness as captain

Hardik Pandya led Gujarat Titans (GT) to their maiden title in the IPL 2022 Final, beating sole winners Rajasthan Royals (RR) by seven wickets at the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad, Sunday evening (May 29).

Hardik & Co. were asked to play first and the 28-year-old skipper was right as he completed a superb with the ball, finishing with 4-0-17-3 before also coming in with the bat to help his side chasing a moderate 131-point target with 11 bullets to spare. After the tremendous win in their very first IPL season, many former cricketers and game pundits praised Hardik’s leadership qualities. GT mentor and former India coach Gary Kirsten also praised Hardik and revealed his uniqueness as a leader.

Speaking to broadcasters after the final, the former South Africa international said: “He (Hardik) was fantastic. I loved working with him. He’s a very high profile man in India, but he has been incredibly humble and eager to learn as a leader and engage with his players, which I think is really, really important as a leader.Especially in the IPL and in India, he has really engaged with all of his players. He wants to help them be a better version. He came in and played with real responsibility, which is very different from what we’ve seen in other IPLs. He hit beautifully.

Hardik finished with his best season with the bat, amassing 487 runs – fourth overall – and also contributed with eight scalps in the recently concluded IPL 15 season. He will now focus on representing India in their upcoming T20I series at home against South Africa, starting June 09.
