India vs SA: Captain Rishabh Pant set to join elite roster in 1st T20I, to overtake Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni

The injured Indian team will face South Africa led by Temba Bavuma in the opener of the five-game T20I series at home on Thursday night (June 9), in New Delhi, India. On Wednesday night (Jun 08), news broke that alternate captain KL Rahul was injured, along with wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav, as a result, Rishabh Pant will lead India in the five T20Is against Proteas.

For the uninitiated, Pant was already named captain when the BCCI selection committee named an Indian team without Rohit Sharma for the SA T20Is. With big names such as Rohit, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah out, and now with the absence of Rahul, Pant has a huge task to keep India’s winning run intact in the shortest format (12), who are one win away from setting a new world record. of most successive T20I victories.

As soon as Pant enters New Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium for the draw with Bavuma, he will join an elite roster by overtaking former captains Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni. Suresh Raina, the former all-rounder, is India’s youngest ever captain in the men’s T20I (23 years and 197 days), hence Pant is set to join him in second place. Pant, 24, will then be followed by MS Dhoni (who captained the T20I aged 26), Virender Sehwag (who was 28 when he captained India in their first-ever T20I in 2006) and Virat.

Virat led India for the first time in the shortest format in early 2017, when he was 28 years old. Therefore, Pant will join a few big names on an elusive list as he is set to lead India for the very first time on Thursday night.

It will be interesting to see how Pant gathers his troops, including Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Avesh Khan, Umran Malik and some experienced militants such as Hardik Pandya and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Hardik will be Pant’s deputy in all five T20Is.
