UK media reported that four Metropolitan Police officers were being investigated for misconduct after a 15-year-old black schoolgirl was strip searched at school. The teenager is called Child Q. Reports added that the girl was strip searched by female Met officers in 2020. The girl was apparently wrongly suspected of transporting cannabis to her school in the east from London. At the time of the search, no adult was present there and also his parents were not informed. She was strip searched while on her period.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), a police watchdog in the UK, said a voluntary referral from the Met was received on May 6, 2021. According to the IOPC, the investigation was opened five days later.
As quoted by the BBC, a spokesperson said: “We can confirm that four Metropolitan Police Service officers have received notices of serious misconduct from us in connection with our ongoing investigation into complaints that Child Q was subjected to an improper strip search.
“As with all of our investigations, we are continually reviewing evidence and investigative leads as the investigation progresses. As part of this, issues have been identified that required further investigative notices to be issued. served on officers,” the spokesperson added.
According to the police watchdog, the officers were being investigated for “potential violations of police professional behavior standards at the level of serious misconduct, which does not necessarily mean that disciplinary proceedings will follow”.
The IOPC also said they were looking into whether the girl’s ethnicity “played a role in the officers’ decision” to strip search her.
