‘I didn’t follow Waqar Younis’: Umran Malik reveals his 3 idols after comparisons with ex-Pakistani leader

Youngster Umran Malik has taken the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 by storm with his impressive display for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Umran received the Emerging Player of the Tournament award after confusing batters with his raw pace throughout the tournament. The 22-year-old recorded more than 150 km/h consistently and also had the second fastest throw of the tournament at 157 km/h behind only Lockie Ferguson, who produced a thunderbolt at 157.3 km /h against Jos Buttler in the IPL 2022 final.

Umran was drafted by Sunrisers Hyderabad as a replacement for injured T Natarajan in the IPL 2021 last year after impressing team management as a net bowler for the franchise. He only managed to play a handful of matches in the IPL last year, but did enough to convince the coaches of his extraordinary skill and talent.

The fast young bowler was retained by SRH ahead of this year’s mega auction and has become a regular member of the XI this season. Umran rocked the batters with his express pace and finished as the highest wicket taker for SRH with 22 wickets in 14 games. He also managed to earn his first call-up to the Indian team thanks to his impressive show in IPL 2022.

The 22-year-old has often been compared to former Pakistani pacer Waqar Younis, with many believing his action to be quite similar to that of the Pakistani rhythm legend. However, Umran recently revealed that he never followed Waqar and his bowling idols are three Indian point guards.

“I did not follow Waqar Younis. I have a natural action. My idols include (Jasprit) Bumrah, (Mohammed) Shami and Bhuvneshwar (Kumar) bhai. I used to follow them when I was playing going up the ranks,” Umran said during Indian Express Idea Exchange.

As Umran shares the locker room with Bhuvneshwar at Sunrisers Hyderabad and shares a great relationship with the senior Indian pacemaker, he may soon get a chance to play with Shami and Bumrah for the Indian team. Umran is already aiming to impress for India in the upcoming T20I series against South Africa at home and wants to win games for his country.

“There’s no point in getting carried away. If it is destined to happen, it will be inchallah. I want to do my best for my country. I had an opportunity in these five matches (T20I) (against South Africa). My target will be for us to win all five matches, I perform well and single-handedly win those matches for India,” said the young point guard.

“First of all, I am really grateful for all the love and respect I have received from all over India. Relatives and other people continue to come home, it feels very good. J ‘ve been a bit busy after the IPL, but I haven’t missed practice and practice,” he added.
