How much are you willing to pay for an air purifier?

Here is a question for you, do you wake up every morning coughing and sneezing? If the answer to this question is a resounding yes, then you are one of the countless victims of allergy season.

Breathing clean air has now become a luxury for most of us. Pollution levels are rising globally, but in India the problem is worse than ever. A Lancet study recently revealed that pollution led to more than 2.3 million premature deaths in India in 2019.

So what do we do? Do we lock ourselves in a room, close doors and windows and hope to take a deep breath of fresh air? Think again. Poor indoor air quality is now becoming a threat we all have to deal with. The onslaught of allergy season is bringing more respiratory problems to urban professionals than ever before.

Enter the air purifier. Over the past five years, air purifiers have gone from a luxury to a necessity. Homes, offices, hotels, spas, schools, and other institutions are all stocking up on air purifiers.

Dyson has made inroads in the Indian market with its stylish and expensive products in all segments. Its air purifiers make big claims and have become staples in mobile homes and rising hotel chains given their high price tag.

The company’s latest air purifier, the Dyson Purifier Cool Formaldehyde TP09 promises to battle the elements in the air around you. Let’s eliminate the exorbitant price. The Dyson is priced at Rs 52,900 and is one of the most expensive offerings in the segment.

But does it live up to its claims and high price tag? Here is our opinion.

In Dyson style, the air purifier looks nothing like an air purifier. The plastic unibody is sleek and stylish. The gold grilles at the bottom are removable and house the air filters. It comes with an LCD screen that gives you very important details about fan speed, filter life and of course the Air Quality Index or AQI inside the room. You’ll be shocked to learn that the air quality inside your bedroom isn’t great either!

There is a power button to turn the purifier on or off on the TP09 body, but I suggest you use the sleek remote to operate the air purifier remotely. Or better yet, sync the device with the Dyson Link mobile app which will help you control your device from anywhere in the house. It worked well for me, especially with a toddler running around.

The Dyson TP09 blends seamlessly into your home’s interiors, and its slender body doesn’t get in the way.

Sync with the Dyson Link app

The Dyson Link app is useful, especially if you like controlling your devices through a common platform. It detects any Dyson product that may be nearby and easily pairs in around 5 minutes. From then on, you can use the app to increase fan speed, turn your device on or off, and even get an idea of the AQI in your room over a period of time. This will give you an idea of how the air purifier works.

Pro tip: take all statistics with a grain of salt as they may not be 100% accurate. This is the case for all air purifiers in all segments.

Does it clean the air in your room?

The Dyson Purifier Cool Formaldehyde claims to capture ultrafine dust and allergens. This all sounds great, but how do you know if it actually works? Dyson says the new purifier comes with formaldehyde detection technology.

Let’s break it down for you. Essentially, formaldehyde is a colorless polluting gas, released by furniture and wood products containing formaldehyde-based resins such as plywood and fiberboard, insulation materials, and DIY products such as paint, papers paints, varnishes and household cleaning products.

Dyson claims its filter can capture all of that and destroy the enemy – in this case, formaldehyde.

I’ve been using the Dyson Purifier Cool Formaldehyde for over three weeks. The review coincided with the worst allergy season I have experienced so far. As someone who takes allergy medication on a daily basis, I’m happy to say that the frequency has dropped significantly inside the home. On weekends, when I’m confined to my room, I barely sneeze or cough, much to the relief of those around me.

However, once I got out, my allergies came back to haunt me almost instantly. And that’s always been the main argument against air purifiers – that they trap you in a bubble of semi-filtered air, making it difficult for you to adapt to poor outdoor air quality.

But this argument is hardly tenable. Why not treat yourself to the luxury of clean air if you can afford it?

Another significant finding: this air purifier was able to capture dust from surrounding furniture. Although no home can be dust free forever, I noticed an improvement in the corners where the air purifier was placed.

Let’s talk about the “Cooling” function. It’s more of a gimmick given the power of the Indian summers; you can use it for targeted cooling for those hot afternoons when your air conditioner just isn’t enough.

Another pro tip: keep windows and doors tightly closed to optimize air purification. This rule applies to all air purifiers in all segments.

Should I buy it?

Should you buy an air purifier that costs more than 50,000 rupees? Depends on your budget. The high price prevents a large part of the population from investing in good quality air purifiers and this is a challenge that brands must face in the future.

While most brands have added air purifiers to their portfolios, Dyson’s technology is superior to most, which is why the price raises eyebrows. Go for this air purifier if you or your family are prone to allergies.

After all, you can’t put a price on being able to breathe clean air, can you?
