Chennai Super Kings (CSK) entered the IPL 2022 as the reigning champions and expectations were once again high for the four-time champions. However, the Yellow Army fell flat and finished in ninth place in what was a forgettable campaign for them.
There were some bright spots for the Chennai franchise though, with some players raising their hands and performing well. South Africa’s Dwaine Pretorius may not have played every game but the versatile player has made his mark with strong performances and recently spilled the wick during his trip with the CSK camp.
Speaking at the press conference ahead of the next India-South Africa T20I, which starts on June 09, Pretorius dwelt on the lessons of CSK skipper MS Dhoni. He revealed: “The most important thing I learned from him is how calm he is in the crease and how hard he tries to relieve himself and put it on the pitcher. He made me realize that at the death the batter is not under more pressure, it is actually the bowler who is under more pressure.”
“As a bowler you can always lose the game if you have to defend 18 of the last three balls and as a hitter you can win it. It was a new mindset. He’s not too excited. He doesn’t get too down on himself. Anything is always possible and I like that about him. He’s very optimistic. He believes he can do anything. I’ll try to bring that into my game: the calm but also this self-confidence that from any position, any game can be won,” added Pretorius.

Speaking on CSK’s disastrous run, where they failed to make the playoffs for the second time in their rich history, Pretorius said: “What was good about the CSK franchise is that she is very experienced We all understand that cricket is not always going well It is very important to take only the positives from a bad season and try to build a stronger future It is about building for the future. year or the next three years and to try to make sure that a bad season is not a total loss.”
Pretorius finished with six scalps from an equal number of games, playing power plays and deathmatches, and also led the charge with the bat with a handy 28 in CSK’s three-wicket victory over the Mumbai Indians (MI), at DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai in Game 33 of IPL 2022.
He is currently part of South Africa’s T20I squad for the five-game series against hosts India.
