Goldman Sachs faces SEC investigation into ESG funds, sources say

The Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating GS of Goldman Sachs Group Inc.,
-5.65%
asset management subsidiary on its funds which aim to invest in compliance with environmental, social and governance standards, according to people familiar with the matter.

The SEC investigation is the latest known example of regulators’ scrutiny of ESG, which aims to generate returns by selecting stocks or bonds using criteria that include environmental, social and governance. The ESG designation has been a boon for asset managers who have struggled in recent years to compete with low-fee index funds.
